Marquette Method - Linda Chao, RN
What is the Marquette Method of Natural Family Planning?
The Marquette Method (MM) is an evidence-based method of NFP that utilizes an at-home fertility monitor to measure a woman's urinary fertility hormones. Couples can use the MM protocol with just the monitor (or track additional biological fertility signs) to identify when the woman is fertile during her cycle and apply that knowledge to their family planning intentions.
About Me
My name is Linda Chao and I am currently a student instructor for the Marquette Method (MM) of NFP. I've been a registered nurse for 13 years and have spent the last 6 years being home full-time with our children. In the MM, my husband and I found a way to practice NFP that felt objective, scientific, and easy (well ... easier.) The MM has been such a blessing for our family that I wanted to become an instructor to help make it more accessible to others.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to get started with the Marquette Method (MM)?
At a minimum, you will need a Clearblue Fertility Monitor (CBFM, a one-time purchase)Â and the CBFM test sticks (ongoing purchase) in order to use the MM. You also need to learn the protocol from a MM instructor!
How effective is the MM?
With correct use, the MM is 98% effective at preventing unintended pregnancies for couples who are trying to avoid pregnancy (in other words, very effective.)
I don't have regular cycles, will the MM work for me?
Yes! One of the biggest myths about NFP is that you have to have regular cycles to use it. With the MM, you are measuring your fertility hormones every cycle and adjusting your fertile window accordingly. The MM can work for all women, including those with reproductive health conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, etc., as well as women in different reproductive stages of life such as postpartum, breastfeeding, and perimenopause.
I'm postpartum/breastfeeding and my period hasn't returned yet. Can I use the MM?
Yes! The MM has a breastfeeding-specific, evidence-based protocol that is 98% effective at preventing an unintended pregnancy for postpartum women whose periods have not returned yet.
How can I learn the MM protocol?
I am currently teaching in-person group classes in the Tyler, Texas area as well as individual sessions via online video conference. Contact me for availability and scheduling!
How much does instruction cost and what does it include?
I'm currently offering low-cost instruction for $50 while I'm in the process of completing my teacher training. This includes a formal follow-up at 1, 3, and 6 months, as well as availability to address questions and concerns via phone/text/email in between. You will also receive digital resources to assist you in getting started with the MM. There will be an additional fee if you need continued support beyond 6 months.
I see that you're a student instructor, what does that mean?
I am currently in the process of completing teacher training to be a MM instructor. Part of the process is a teaching practicum in which I am able to teach clients while working closely with a preceptor who is a certified MM instructor. I have also used the method myself for 6 years, including going through the postpartum/breastfeeding transition twice, so I am very familiar with the protocols!
